PCB failures

(1 / 1)

Rick Moncrief;

I returned today from vacation to hear there are several problems in
production. First, the horizon poly on 13 of the 20 or so games had rainbow
colors. These colors stay even though I rewrite the colors every frame. The
colors also stay even though the level (the whole color scheme) changes. This
problem was first noticed yesterday.

Second, of the 13 games mentioned above, 6 had GSP Timeout Errors.
When I was there, there were at least two other games with GSP Timeout Errors.
All of these PCBs had Hitachi VRAMs.

For your information, I was told that a "large" percentage of 2101-7
parts have failed recently. I was told the numbers are in the 16 to 18 count.
I was also told that 9 failed yesterday alone (6 with the date code 9121).

The Hitachi VRAMs just hit final assembly yesterday afternoon. I
suspect these parts may have something to do with the problem(s) above.

I checked the 12 or so games with the Samsung VRAMs with modified PCBs.
They have no GSP Timeouts and I have seen no "rainbow" horizons. What does the
mod Jed requested do?

Bob Stewart, Jim Freitas, and I agreed that we would not ship any games
until we have determined more about these failures. We are currently unboxing
and locating all the games that fail. We will try replacing the Hitachi parts
with Samsung parts. Please check with Ken Williams tomorrow to determine the
results of their experiments.

Bob Stewart, Jim Freitas, and I will not be in tomorrow. Bob and I can
be reached at the AMOA.

Could you please call Jed and ask him to come in and help solve this
problem? I realize he is on vacation but we are in a position where we need
to ship games without failures.

						Thanks
